Hancock Shaker Village is a living history museum which celebrates the history and legacy of the Shakers, a religious group that lived communally and promoted values of equality and pacificism. This site, on the National Register of Historic Places, was active until 1960. The grounds consist of 20 historic buildings and a working farm and garden, surrounded by 750 acres of pasture, woods and hiking trails. Of particular interest are the Round Stone Barn (1826), the Brick Building that served as a dormitory (1830), and the Museum which houses permanent and changing exhibitions. Staff demonstrate traditional Shaker trade crafts on a rotating schedule in various locations. There is a café and gift shop on the premises. The Village is open seasonally, so please check the website for up-to-date details.

Founded in 1952, Historic Deerfield is an outdoor museum that presents the history and culture of early New England and the Connecticut River Valley. Visitors can tour 12 carefully-preserved antique houses dating from 1730 to 1850 which sit on a mile-long street laid out in 1671, and explore collections of regional furniture, silver, textiles, and other decorative arts on display in the houses and in the Flynt Center of Early New England Life. The museum's collections include more than 25,000 objects made or used in America between 1650 and 1850. In addition to the structures on the property, there is a footpath—open seasonally—that leads to the Deerfield River, and a garden that contains heirloom plants and herbs used in colonial New England. At the heart of the Mark Twain House & Museum, located in Hartford, CT, is the restored 25-room Victorian home where the author and his family lived from 1874 to 1891. It was here that Twain wrote “Adventures of Huckleberry Finn,” “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer,” and “A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court.” Among other impressive rooms, this National Historic Landmark features a dramatic grand hall, a lush glass conservatory, a library and the billiard room, where the author wrote. Only the first floor is wheelchair accessible. One accesses the site at the Webster Bank Museum Center (fully wheelchair accessible), which is home to exhibits, a theatre showing a Ken Burns mini-documentary on Twain, a museum store and café.

Founded in 1929, this maritime museum—“The Museum of America and the Sea”—occupies 9 acres on the Mystic River in Mystic, CT and includes a recreated New England coastal village, a working shipyard, formal exhibit halls, and state-of-the-art artifact storage facilities. The Museum is home to more than 500 historic watercraft, including four National Historic Landmark vessels, most notably the 1841 whaleship Charles W. Morgan, America's oldest commercial ship still in existence. Occasional demonstrations and performances—including costumed role payers strolling the grounds—bring to life different aspects of maritime life. A gallery and series of shops are on the premises.

The New England Air Museum, located next to the Bradley International Airport in Windsor Locks, CT, is the largest aviation museum in New England. The museum houses over 80 aircraft in three large hangars and an outdoor display area, as well as an extensive collection of engines, instruments, aircraft parts, uniforms and personal memorabilia. Important historical aircraft in their holdings include the Sikorsky VS-44A, the Goodyear ZNPK-28 Blimp Control Car, and the Silas Brooks balloon basket. In addition to the exhibits, restoration hanger, and flight simulators, there is a gift shop and a small eating area with vending machines offering snacks and beverages. A large parking area for persons with disabilities is available close to the entrance. Wheelchairs may be checked out at the admissions counter, including a powered wheelchair, subject to availability.

The Porter-Phelps-Huntington Museum is located in a well-preserved, eighteenth-century house which contains the belongings of the single family which occupied it, items accumulated and preserved over the course of 300 years. The house—listed on the National Register of Historic Places—is surrounded by over 350 acres of protected farmland, forest, and river frontage retaining its original rural setting. A system of hiking trails allows for some exploration of the grounds. Tours within the house include multiple staircases, so will not be accessible to all. The Museum follows a seasonal schedule; please check the website on the day of your visit for details.

The Springfield Museums offer access to five different museums, including the George Walter Vincent Smith Art Museum, the Springfield Science Museum, the Michele and Donald D'Amour Museum of Fine Arts, the Amazing World of Dr. Seuss Museum, and the Dr. Seuss National Memorial Sculpture Garden, all under a single admission. The museum, a part of the Boston National Historical Park, is located in the Charlestown Navy Yard near the ship USS Constitution (“Old Ironsides”) at the end of Boston’s Freedom Trail. The museum provides a detailed look at the history of the ship, information about the war of 1812, and the battle between the ship and HMS Java. Stories are told through interactive exhibits, unique artifacts, archival records, and artwork. The museum also includes a research library which houses a strong collection of manuscripts, books, artifacts, and microfilm of primary source material. The ship itself is maintained by the US Navy, and may be visited free of charge on certain days.
